What this template builds for you
Round dining tables have three structural advantages: every seat is equidistant from the center (fair access to shared dishes), no "head of the table" (egalitarian family feel), and they fit more people per square meter than rectangular tables when packed. Trade-offs: round tables can't tuck into corners and they take more floor space than a same-seat rectangular.
The template supports 90–150 cm diameter, three structures: single-pedestal (most beautiful, hardest to build), 4-leg (most stable), cross-base (Asian / hotel restaurant). 120 cm seats 6, 140 cm seats 8, 150 cm seats 10 (tight).
This is heirloom-class woodworking — a 140 cm diameter solid-wood round dining table retails for $750–1,500. DIY material cost is $200–400 depending on species. The table will sit in the dining room for decades, every meal happening around it, in a way no off-the-shelf piece can match.
Who this template suits
✓ Recommended for
- · Family meals that prioritize equality
- · Chinese-style restaurants
- · Building heirloom furniture
× Not for
- · Dining rooms < 400 × 400 cm (140 cm round + chairs needs 350 cm of swing room)
- · No workshop big enough to flip a 140 cm round top
- · Need an extending leaf (round tables don't extend cleanly)

FAQ
Does a round table require a single pedestal?+
No. Single-pedestal is most beautiful but hardest (center-of-gravity balance is complex). Beginners: 4-leg. Second project: single-pedestal.
Lazy Susan?+
Chinese dining wants one — Lazy Susan hardware diameter = top diameter × 0.5. The template can pre-mark the center mount.
Will a round table be less stable than a square one?+
Same center of mass. But 4-leg round tables should splay 5–8° (bigger footprint) for added stability.
How many boards in the edge-glue?+
140 cm diameter ÷ 20–28 cm per board = 5–7 boards. Too few = each board too wide and cups. Too many = lots of joint lines. Oak / maple at 20–25 cm is the safe zone.
How do I cut the round top?+
Mark the round on the edge-glued blank (center pin + radius pencil), rough-cut with jigsaw at 5 mm shy, then router-and-circle-jig to the final radius.
