What this template builds for you

Round stools win on visual lightness — for the same dimensions, a round stool reads smaller than a square one. Drops into a living room as a side perch, sits next to the coffee table without blocking the path.

3-leg round stools have a unique property: they're stable on uneven floors (3 points always touch). The trade-off is lower load capacity than 4-leg. 4-leg round stools carry more load but need flat floors. The template lets you pick 3 or 4 legs, splay angle (6–12°), and edge-glue the seat (any seat > 30 cm needs glue-up). Seat finish: bare wood, oil, or padded.

A round seat is the best beginner project for non-rectilinear shapes — edge-glue, jigsaw the rough circle, then router-clean the edge. After this build, your "curve-work" muscles are warmed up for round tables and round coffee tables later.

Who this template suits

Recommended for

  • · Building a living-room side perch
  • · Practicing round edge-glue
  • · Want a multipurpose, low-footprint stool

× Not for

  • · No jigsaw or trim router (you need curve-cutting tools)
  • · Need > 100 kg load capacity (3-leg has structural limits)
  • · Want a chair with a back (use round-chair or dining-chair)

Parameters you can adjust

The algorithm auto-computes dimensions, joinery, and material usage.

Diameter
30–40 cm is practical; > 45 cm starts to be a side table
Height
Stool 42–45 cm, side perch 50–55 cm
Leg count
3-leg (stable on uneven floors) / 4-leg (more load)
Splay
6–12°; more = more stable but visually heavier

Round stool common dimensions

These numbers come straight from this template's adjustable ranges and defaults, so they update whenever the template does.

Main dimensions list only the upper bound: the template has no meaningful lower limit. Values in mm with cm in brackets.

How to pick your sizes

  • Seat height 42–45 cm for a 72–75 cm table; 40–45 cm as a low or shoe stool.

When you'd build one

Living-room side perch

35 cm diameter, 50 cm tall — drinks rest beside the sofa.

Kid stool

25 cm tall version for kids — they can reach things themselves.

Gift

Small, ships easily; ROI per unit is high. Add an engraved name for warmth.

Plant stand

40 cm tall round stool doubles as a planter base — sized exactly to your pot.

4 preset variations

Swap styles in one click — no need to re-adjust every parameter from scratch.

3-leg splayed
Three legs splayed 8° — stable on uneven floors, first choice for living-room side perch.
4-leg square-leg
Four square legs, round seat — best load capacity; auxiliary stool by a dining table.
4-leg turned-cone
Four turned tapered legs with a real-wood round seat — Nordic café staple.
3-leg heavy-duty
Three 45 × 45 mm legs splayed 10° — bench / footstool grade; kids can safely sit on it.

FAQ

Is 3-leg really more stable than 4-leg?+

On uneven floors, yes — 3 points always touch, while 4 lift one corner. 4-leg carries load better (distributed evenly).

How do I cut the round seat?+

Edge-glue first, then jigsaw or router-and-circle-jig the round. The template gives center point + radius for marking.

Is 12° splay too much?+

12° is the visual limit — much more and it looks awkward. The template warns when proportions are unbalanced.

Seat finish?+

Seats contact clothing, so use hardening finish (Danish oil, urethane, or shellac). Don't use wax — it transfers onto light-colored pants.

How do legs attach to a round seat?+

Two common methods: pocket-hole screws (drilled at the splay angle on a doweling jig) or traditional tenons (turn tenons on leg tops, drill matching holes in seat underside). The template has both diagrams.
