What this template builds for you

Nightstands are the most-used and most-worth-building bedroom furniture — retail nightstands run a standard 40 × 40 × 50 cm, but your bed might be 55 cm tall (high box spring) or 35 cm (platform). Off-the-shelf rarely lines up.

The template auto-suggests nightstand height from your bed height (0–5 cm taller than mattress is the phone-reach sweet spot). 40–50 cm wide × 35–45 cm deep. Drawer version holds glasses, skincare; shelf version holds books, lamps, humidifiers. Hybrid is most practical: drawer on top, shelf below.

Material cost runs $25–50 each — but this is what you see every morning and night. Pick a wood you like, hardware you like, and years later you'll still like it. Two matched nightstands set the room.

When you'd build one

Newlywed bedroom

Build two matched nightstands for the wedding-night bedroom — far more meaningful than IKEA.

B&B fit-out

Need 4 identical nightstands; in-house build runs ~80% of IKEA cost at way better quality.

New mattress

Switched beds, old nightstand is now the wrong height. Rebuild one to match.

Parents' room

Build a height-matched nightstand for a parent's room — they won't fumble in the dark at 3 a.m.

4 preset variations

Swap styles in one click — no need to re-adjust every parameter from scratch.

Tapered-leg shelf
Tapered legs + lower shelf — minimalist Nordic, fastest build, fine for phone + glasses.
Tapered-leg drawer
Tapered legs + single drawer — skincare and medication hide cleanly, top stays uncluttered.
Square-leg drawer + shelf
Square legs, drawer on top + shelf below — most capacity, both modes available.
Symmetric pair
Two identical nightstands as a set — most polished newlywed configuration.

FAQ

Ideal nightstand height?+

0–5 cm above mattress is the sweet spot (no need to reach up). If you like to sit up before reaching, add 5 cm.

Make both nightstands identical?+

Traditional set is symmetric. Modern style sometimes runs asymmetric (one drawer + one shelf) and it can look great.

Can I add a USB port?+

Yes. Drill a 30 mm hole at the back for the cable, mount a USB module to the top (off-the-shelf for ~$10). Charges your phone without cable spaghetti.

Depth — 35 or 45 cm?+

35 cm is enough for an iPad + phone. 45 cm if you want books and a humidifier. 40 cm is the comfortable middle if you have the room.

Back panel needed?+

If wall-mounted, you can skip it. But adding a 9 mm thin back panel makes the lamp cord exit through a clean hole rather than a gap.
