What this template's algorithm handles for you
What this template builds for you
Boxes give the highest skill return on the lowest material cost — under $3 of scrap teaches you dovetails, finger joints, dividers, hinges, and decorative inlay in one project. Build a box and your skill bumps a full notch.
The template supports dovetails (highest-craft, heirloom-grade), finger joints (mid-level, most common), and rabbets (entry-level, glue-and-pin). Add dividers (jewelry box), drawers (storage box), or tool-holding channels (toolbox). Lids can be hinged, fitted, or sliding.
Material cost runs $2–8, but commercial dovetail boxes sell for $60–150 (Japanese craftsman pricing). The bigger payoff: after 30 hand-cut dovetails, your work makes people stop and ask, "how did you do that?" That kind of skill carries forward.

FAQ
Are dovetails hard?+
Hand-cut dovetails take 30–50 reps to feel comfortable. A dovetail jig (Leigh / Porter Cable) makes it a 30-minute job. Beginners often start with the jig.
Which hinges?+
Small boxes: butt hinges (cheapest). Mid boxes: concealed hinges. Large boxes: weight-bearing hinges. The template recommends based on size.
Do I need a lid stay?+
Recommended. Otherwise the hinge takes too much load and warps. A simple chain or strap works.
What stock thickness?+
6–9 mm is most common (light). 12 mm for larger boxes (gives weight). Dovetails want 12–15 mm minimum — anything thinner and the tail tip has no meat.
How are interior dividers fixed?+
Slot them in: cut a 3 mm groove on the side walls, dividers slide in. No glue needed and they pull out for cleaning. The template gives groove position and depth (1/3 of wall thickness).
