Tatami Raised Platform Calculator

Draw the platform → auto-compute frame, plywood, surface, underlay, skirting →Print an A4 client quote.

What used to take a carpenter 30 minutes on a notepad now finishes in 30 seconds. Main joists auto-align with plywood seams, 2D packing pairs offcuts, underlay rolls round up, and door-opening skirting deductions are automatic.

The 4 worst things about tatami / raised-platform takeoffs

Exactly what this tool was built to fix

🤯
Brain-fryer math, easy to over- or under-order
How many main joists, sub joists, plywood sheets, underlay rolls — each in different units and different logic. A pen and paper for 30 minutes might still come out wrong.
📐
Plywood seams not landing on joists
Set main/sub spacing wrong and plywood seams float between joists — you'll have to add extra battens to support them, wasting material and time.
📦
Order too much plywood, leftovers pile up in storage
11 offcut pieces could pack into 4 new sheets, but without 2D packing math people just multiply 'pieces × 1.2 waste' → 30% over-order.
📄
Client quotes still need Excel formatting
Once you finish counting, you still type Excel, paste a logo, format A4 — half a day per quote. Change one dimension and redo it all.

What this tool does

Platform shape → BOM → quote, end to end

📐
Platform shape: rectangle / L + columns
Drag length / width / height, L-shape inner corners, 0–2 interior columns auto-notched, 3D updates live.
🪵
Surface: laminate / engineered / solid wood
Plank length & width tunable, 5 start angles, long/short axis switch, mm-level expansion gap.
🧱
Joists auto-align with plywood
Main joists evenly along plywood short edge, sub joists along long edge — plywood seams land exactly on joist centerlines. Zero snap waste.
📦
Smart 2D plywood packing
11 cut pieces auto-pack into 4 new sheets via guillotine FFD, with sheet IDs 1-2-3 labeled — lumber yard reads it directly.
🛡️
Underlay + skirting
PE / EPE / Tyvek 3 specs with auto roll count. Skirting auto-deducts door opening lengths.
🧾
One-click A4 quote
Client info, line items, totals, terms, signature — 4-column, 3-table layout on one A4 page. CSV export BOM for the crew.

Parameters you can tweak

The algorithm auto-computes frame, plywood seams, surface layout, underlay rolls.

Platform shape (rectangle / L)
Live 3D as you drag length/width; L-shape inner corners can dodge columns, beams, window frames.
Platform height (H)
30–60 cm tunable; over 60 cm the system warns to add sub posts to avoid wobble.
Interior columns (0–2)
Notch a rectangle into the platform for each column position; 5 mm clearance to column face.
Surface spec
Laminate / engineered / solid wood, plank length & width tunable — compare which spec wastes less.
Layout pattern (5 types)
Straight, 1/2 stagger, 1/3 stagger, herringbone, chevron V — start angle independently tunable.
Main joist spacing
Back-solved from 'plywood short edge ÷ N' so plywood seams always land on joist centerlines.
Sub joist spacing
30 / 40 / 45 cm presets — bigger spans auto-upgrade to thicker battens.
Plywood spec (4×8 / 3×6)
Toggle between specs to compare waste; auto 2D layout.
Underlay spec
Pick PE / EPE / Tyvek — different roll length & width auto-computes roll count.
Skirting (height / door cuts)
Set skirting height; mark door positions and the system auto-deducts from total length.

Auto-generated outputs

Six artifacts at once — print A4 and bring it to the shop or hand it to the client.

🪵
Frame BOM
Top frame, bottom frame, main joists, sub joists — meters & counts. Dual-labeled Taiwanese tsai / feet.
📦
Plywood layout drawing
Auto 2D guillotine FFD packing, sheet IDs 1-2-3 labeled, lumber yard reads it directly.
🛡️
Underlay roll count
Round-up from platform area + roll spec; door openings auto-deducted.
🎨
Surface plank count
Start angle, expansion gap, 5 layout patterns all baked into the waste calc.
🧾
A4 client quote
Client info + line items + totals + terms + signature — one A4 page.
📊
BOM CSV export
Excel opens cleanly, crews use it for procurement directly.

Real outputs

These are actual artifacts the tool produces — they update live as you change dimensions.

2D framing + column notches
2D framing + column notches
Rectangle / L-shape + 0–2 column notches; main along short edge, sub along long edge, auto evenly spaced.
3D exploded view
3D exploded view
Top frame, bottom frame, plywood, surface — each layer expanded. Clients grasp why it's NT$ 8,000+ per ping in seconds.
2D surface layout
2D surface layout
Start angle, expansion gap, long/short axis direction baked in — clients pick patterns by sight.

※ Change dimensions / surface / column count — these all redraw live.

Who it's for

🔨
Carpenters / GCs
Client asks 'how much per ping for a tatami' — pull out your phone, change dimensions, requote on the spot.
🏠
DIY home tatami builders
Read the BOM, walk into the lumber yard — no contractor needed, no Excel, even plywood packing is told to you.
🪜
Interior designers
Drop a 3D + quote into your pitch, client closes on the spot.
🎓
Carpentry academy students
Run the framing logic from class on real numbers. Bridge from practice to client work seamlessly.
⚠️ Not for these situations
  • Non-orthogonal platforms (slanted walls, curves, irregular edges) — only rectangle and L-shape supported
  • More than 2 interior columns — multi-column requires manual segmentation
  • Tatami mat / igusa sizing precision — this tool computes the underframe and plywood, not the tatami mats themselves
  • Existing CAD/Revit workflows — this fills the gap for those who lack CAD but still need takeoffs

When you'll use it

🔨 On-site quoting

Client asks 'how much per ping for a 3 m × 4 m tatami' — pull out your phone, sketch 3D and A4 quote in 30 seconds, close right there. Spec changes recompute instantly; no Excel back at the studio.

🏠 DIY tatami builders

Building a sleeping platform, a guest tatami room, a storage podium — draw the platform → tool tells you how many 12-ft battens, how many plywood sheets, how many underlay rolls. Walk into the lumber yard ready.

🪜 Designer pitches

Drop 3D + quote on a tatami proposal, beat the competition by one extra page and win the project. Client says 'change to 50 cm height' — change on the spot, no overnight grind.

🎓 Carpentry academy students

The framing logic, plywood seam alignment, underlay principles you learned in class — this tool shows you 'how the algorithm computes them'. Bridge from practice to client work.

FAQ

How is this different from the Floor Simulator?
The floor simulator computes flat-laid wood flooring (laminate / engineered) with no frame. The raised platform is a 30 cm+ podium with top frame, bottom frame, main joists, sub joists, plywood, underlay, skirting — the wood-construction method for tatami / underlay beds / guest sleeping platforms. Both share the same unlock key — buy one, unlock both.
Does the plywood packing really save material?
Real test: 11 cut pieces packed via 2D guillotine — a 3 m × 4 m tatami originally costing '8 full sheets + 11 cuts = 19 plywood sheets' becomes '8 full sheets + 4 new sheets cut into 11 pieces' = 12 sheets total. Saves 7 sheets (~35%), NT$ 3,500+ saved.
Is the quote accurate?
Material quantity is BOM-precise (main joist meters, plywood sheet counts, underlay rolls — units all correct). Unit prices use your own lumber-yard cost and your own labor rate. The system doesn't sneak in 'market price' inflation — all unit-price fields are blank for you to fill. Whatever you fill is what gets calculated.
Can I export PDF / CSV?
A4 quotes print straight from the browser → Save as PDF. Logo / company info / terms are filled once in 'Branding' panel and reused. BOM exports to CSV, Excel opens cleanly.
How much does the tool cost?
Pro Monthly $9/mo — includes all 26 furniture templates + ceiling framing + floor simulator + raised platform. Pro Annual $79/yr — adds client quoting system + STL/CNC export + unlimited dimensions.
Can I buy just the raised platform tool?
Yes. The raised platform shares the 'floor' unlock key with the Floor Simulator — a single-tool purchase unlocks both. See /pricing.
My place isn't a perfect rectangle — anything besides L?
v1 supports rectangle, L-shape, and up to 2 column notches. Non-orthogonal polygons (slanted walls, U-shape, cross shape) are on the roadmap and will land in the same wave as the floor simulator — seamless upgrade.
Will the tool keep getting updates?
Yes. The tool launched 2026-05 — 3D layer toggles, plywood packing algorithm, install-step cards, underlay catalog were all added within 2 weeks of launch. Roadmap: more columns, slanted edges, herringbone surfaces, on-site cutouts (light fixtures / outlets).
