The 4 worst things about wood floor takeoffs

Exactly what this tool was built to fix

🤯
Plank counts often over- or under-ordered
Room 4 m × 3 m, plank 121×19.5 cm — how many do you order? Half a day later you forgot to deduct the door opening.
🌀
Herringbone math fries your brain
Is the herringbone waste 15% or 22%? Can offcuts be paired? Just thinking about it hurts — the lumber yard usually adds 20% blindly.
📐
Wrong start angle, repaint the whole row
Top-left or center start? 60 cm or 40 cm stagger? Set it wrong once and you redraw everything to check.
📄
Quoting means opening Excel again
Once you finish counting, you still type Excel, paste a logo, format A4. Change a dimension and redo it all — half a day gone.

What this tool does

Room shape → layout → quote, end to end

📐
9 room shapes
Rectangle / L / T / U / cross / Z / hexagon / custom polygon — drag length & width and recalc live.
🪵
3 material families + specs
Laminate 121×19.5, engineered, solid wood 3-inch / 5-inch / 2-inch — pricing units match the lumber yard.
🌀
4 layout patterns
Straight, half stagger, random stagger, herringbone. Herringbone offcuts pair back automatically.
🎯
5 start corners
Top-left / top-right / bottom-left / bottom-right / center. Center auto-computes symmetric edge widths. Each plank labeled with cut side.
🚪
Door & trim deductions
Set door-opening cm and skirting toggle, the system subtracts and reports net usage.
🧾
A4 quote + CSV cut plan
Client info, line items, totals, terms — one A4 page. BOM exports to CSV for the crew.

Parameters you can tweak

The algorithm auto-computes plank count, waste, skirting meters.

Room shape (9 types)
Rectangle, L-shape, U-shape, cross, bay window + 0–2 internal columns — drag the 2D editor.
Plank spec
Laminate / engineered / solid wood with mm-level length & width — compare which spec wastes less.
Layout pattern (5 types)
Straight, 1/2 stagger, 1/3 stagger, herringbone, chevron V.
Start angle
0° / 30° / 45° / 90° — auto-computes miter waste.
Long axis direction
Lay planks along room's long or short edge — different visual extension, different waste.
Expansion gap (mm)
Wall expansion gaps from 8 mm to 15 mm — affects edge trim material usage.
Skirting (height / door cuts)
Set skirting height; mark door positions and the system auto-subtracts from total length.
Underlay spec (optional)
Pick PE / EPE / Tyvek — different roll length & width auto-computes roll count.

Auto-generated outputs

Six artifacts at once — print A4 and bring it to the shop or hand it to the client.

🪵
Plank count
Start angle, expansion gaps, 5 patterns all baked into the waste calc — laminate / engineered / solid wood share the same algorithm.
📐
Layout preview
2D live layout, 3D perspective for real texture feel — clients don't have to imagine.
🔁
5 patterns instantly compared
Switch patterns and recalc in one second — 'how much more waste is herringbone vs straight' answered instantly.
📏
Skirting meters
Auto-computed from room perimeter, door openings auto-deducted, wood / PVC trim both supported.
🧾
A4 quote
Client info + line items + totals + terms on one A4 page. Save as PDF and email the client.
📊
BOM CSV export
Excel opens cleanly, crews use it for procurement directly.

Real outputs

These are actual artifacts the tool produces — they update live as you change dimensions.

9 room shapes + 5 layout patterns
9 room shapes + 5 layout patterns
Drag the room outline → see the layout live, switch straight/stagger/herringbone with one click.
Plank spec + start angle
Plank spec + start angle
8 common plank specs one-click apply; start angle / expansion gap / long axis all tunable.

※ Change dimensions / switch pattern / switch plank spec — these all redraw live.

Who it's for

🔨
Wood floor installers / GCs
Client asks 'how many boxes for the living room' — pull out your phone, change dimensions, requote on the spot.
🏠
DIY floor replacement
Read the BOM, walk into HOLA / B&Q — no contractor needed, no Excel, even start angle is told to you.
🪜
Interior designers
Drop a layout drawing + quote into your pitch, client closes on the spot. Material swaps don't require a redraw.
🎓
Carpentry academy students
Run the install logic from class on real numbers. Bridge from practice to client work seamlessly.
⚠️ Not for these situations
  • Tile, stone, vinyl flooring — this tool calculates wood flooring, not hard materials
  • Staircase / skirting-only projects — this tool computes floor installation, skirting is length-deducted only
  • Curved / irregular rooms — v1 supports 9 orthogonal polygons, curves not yet supported
  • Existing CAD/Revit workflows — this fills the gap for those who lack CAD but still need takeoffs

When you'll use it

🔨 On-site quoting

Client asks 'how much more for herringbone in the living room' — switch the pattern on the spot, 2D preview + quote re-runs in one second, client picks pattern right there.

🪜 GC / designer pitch

Propose 3 bedrooms + 2 living rooms with different patterns and colors each — all on one A4 page. Spec changes don't require a redraw; 30-minute job done in 5.

🏠 DIY floor replacement

Old-house remodel, laying it yourself — draw the room → tool tells you how many laminate planks and skirting strips to order. Walk into the lumber yard ready.

🎓 Carpentry academy student

The install logic, start angles, expansion gaps you learned in class — this tool shows you 'how the algorithm computes them'. Bridge from practice to client work.

FAQ

What's the difference between laminate, engineered, and solid wood?
Laminate is HDF with printed wood-grain laminate — durable, scratch-resistant, cheap, but water-damaged. Engineered is HDF topped with 1–2 mm real wood veneer — real-wood feel, moisture-resistant, the mainstream pick. Solid wood is 100% real wood — best feel but most expensive and expands/contracts. This tool supports all three with auto-applied specs and pricing.
Is herringbone waste really that high?
Herringbone waste runs 12–22% vs 1.5–6.6% for straight. But herringbone looks expensive and commands premium pricing. This tool pairs herringbone offcuts back (one cut produces two planks shared between bays), shows you actual waste, and the lumber yard's blanket 20% markup can save you 5–10%.
What does center-start mean? Should I choose it?
Center-start = laying from room centerline outward, so first/last rows have symmetric width. Pros: symmetric edge waste, most visually balanced. Cons: one seam down the middle. For most living rooms we recommend center-start; small rooms can stay top-left.
How is this different from 'Tatami Raised Platform'?
The floor simulator computes flat-laid wood flooring (laminate / engineered / solid) with no frame — directly on the slab. The raised platform is a 30 cm+ podium with top frame, bottom frame, main joists, sub joists, plywood, underlay, skirting. Both share the same unlock key — buy one, unlock both.
Can I export PDF / CSV?
A4 quotes print straight from the browser → Save as PDF. Logo / company info / terms are filled once in 'Branding' panel and reused. BOM exports to CSV, Excel opens cleanly.
How much does the tool cost?
Pro Monthly $9/mo — includes all 26 furniture templates + ceiling framing + floor simulator + raised platform. Pro Annual $79/yr — adds client quoting system + STL/CNC export + unlimited dimensions.
Can I buy just the floor simulator?
Yes. The floor simulator shares the 'floor' unlock key with the Tatami Raised Platform, so a single-tool purchase unlocks both. See /pricing.
My place isn't a perfect rectangle — anything besides L?
v1 supports rectangle, L, T, U, cross, Z, hexagon — 7 orthogonal polygons, plus custom polygons. Slanted walls and curves not yet supported but on the roadmap.
Will the tool keep getting updates?
Yes. Herringbone algorithm, 9 room shapes, 5 start angles, 2D offcut pairing — all added incrementally after launch. Roadmap: slanted walls / curves, 3D perspective, thermal expansion tips, vendor spec database integration.
