What this template builds for you

A desk is the most-bought piece of furniture in modern homes — but 80% of off-the-shelf desks are 110 cm wide × 75 cm tall × 60 cm deep. They never fit. If your corner is 145 cm wide, you want 72 cm tall (you're 168 cm), 55 cm deep (less light-blocking), the only option is to build it.

This desk template supports 1–3 drawers (left / right / center), 1–2 lower shelves, a 60 mm cable port at the rear, and an optional outlet-strip channel. Three base structures: 4 straight legs (most desk-like), 2 side panels with drawer carcase (sturdiest), A-frame (most material-efficient).

Key size rule: desk height = your height / 4 + 5 cm. 168 cm tall → 47 cm desk height (chair included). 175 cm → 48–50 cm. The template suggests automatically from your height input.

When you'd build one

Remote-work upgrade

Three years on a folding desk — your back hurts. Build one sized to you.

Kid desk

Kid moving up to middle school needs a real desk — build 130 cm wide, finish with non-toxic oil.

Studio desk

Studio needs two identical desks; material cost runs ~50% of buying them.

Corner fit

Your bedroom has a 145 cm wide corner — store-bought desks won't fit. A custom build does.

4 preset variations

Swap styles in one click — no need to re-adjust every parameter from scratch.

Four straight legs, plain top
Most standard desk — no drawer or shelf — finishes in 2 days.
Side-panel with drawers
Right side has 2 drawers + a side panel — best for stationery-heavy users.
A-frame minimalist
Two A-frame side panels — minimum material, crisp visual, loft / industrial feel.
Cross-stretcher reinforced
Four legs + lower stretcher — handles heavy monitors and stacks of books.

FAQ

Standard desk height?+

No universal standard. 72–75 cm is typical retail, but < 165 cm tall = aim for 70 cm; > 175 cm = aim for 76 cm. The template suggests based on your input.

Do I need drawers?+

Depends on your workflow. Most remote workers actually don't (everything's on the laptop) — a plain top is cleaner. One drawer covers most stationery needs.

55 or 60 cm deep?+

Depends on monitor size. ≤ 24" = 55 cm is enough (eye-to-screen 50 cm). ≥ 27" = 60 cm so the screen isn't too close.

What top material?+

Veneered MDF is cheapest (~$25 / panel). Edge-glued solid wood has the best feel ($80–130 / panel). MDF + paint looks good but hates humidity. For desks, edge-glued solid wood — no regrets after 10 years.

Where do the cable ports go?+

Top rear, 10–15 cm in from each side. Rear is invisible from the front and within easy reach of the strip. 60 mm diameter clears an HDMI head.
